Financial Literacy
This term our major inquiry focus has been around financial literacy. We have been working hard and earning Ranzau Dollars for various jobs we have around the classroom or school. The goal was to see how much money you could get by the end of the term. We have had a class bank that is open each morning and Jed and Jessica have been our trusty bankers! We have all formed businesses and are creating products or providing a service for our Ranzau Market evening next Tuesday. It has been heaps of fun!

It was a really hot day and we were all exhausted by the end of the day!

The Amazing Top Team
On Sunday 2 Ranzau teams took part in Top Team 2011 at Saxton Stadium. It was Awesome! There were some really fun and challenging activities. Our favourite activity was the one with gumboots and water, you had to transport water in gumboots that you were wearing. Another fun one was the horse one, we lapped Richmond primary in that one. Sophie was the Jockey most of the time but Ollie,Tom and Britney also had a turn. It was so much fun even though we didn't win.

Pet Day
Last Tuesday we had Pet Day, lots of people brought pets. We had an interchange with our buddies so we could do activities in the different classes. The kittens in room 3 were really cute and a few people got to hold them. After morning tea we went round the classes to see everyone elses caged pets. Ollie had a pretty bad experiance when Jacobs cat made a swipe at him (everyone thought the cat was pretty stressy!) After lunch we had the larger animals at the ring. We had a dog obediance display and the dogs were very speedy! Some other dogs were not so obediant. We also had lamb drinking races and Abbeys lamb won. Then we had the Horses and they were super awesome especially when Jessica had to talk about them. We had a best dressed pet and a Grand parade. To finish pet day Rohan showed his pigeons that know how to get home no matter how far away they are.
Everyone enjoyed pet day.

Ranzau Rugby World Cup
Wow, what a fantastic day! On Friday we a Rugby World cup and we played tabloid sports. Tabloids day is a day when you have an adopted country and you go around the circuts and do an activity and you earn points ,who ever has the most points at the end of the day wins. We even had a huge inflatable obstacle course. New Zealand won our World Cup tabloids day! Maybe that is a good sign that the All Blacks will win the World Cup.

Giornata Italiana! - Italian Day!
Yesterday we had an Italian day. We all dressed in green, white and red. We had an Italian day because the Italian rugby team is based here in Nelson. We were also raising money for a new St John ambulance. Each class made a different Italian food for our shared lunch. We got face paint and we each brought along three dollars. The day was great and the food was delicious.

Rainbow Jelly
Yum! Room Eight's maths class has been learning about volume and capacity. For that we made rainbow jelly. We had cola, boysenberry, raspberry, lime, orange, and lemonade. We had to measure how many milliliters were in our cup and then decide what amount of each flavour we would have. On friday we can eat it, yum! We used milliliters to measure how much jelly we were putting in. This week we have been learning to convert from milliliters to liters and liters to kiloliters.

Fantastic Faces of the World Cup
Room Eight have been making masks and we have painted them the flags of countries playing in the Rugby World Cup. We had to do lots of layers of paper mache so our masks are really strong. When they were dry, we used sandpaper to smooth them down. This week we have been busy painting them with our adopted country of the World Cup. Some of the flags have been really tricky! Especially the ones with lots of little details like USA, Wales and Fiji. We will add some more photos of them once they are all finished.

New Pillows for Room Eight
Yesterday Maree (Britney's Mum) and Katelyn came to give us some new pillows that they had made for our class. They have been working really hard and made 5 new pillows for us to use in the classroom. Maree saw that our old pillows were past their used by date so she decided that her and Katelyn would make some new ones.
We love them and they are already getting lots of use!

Guilty or Not Guilty?
I honestly think the big bad wolf is innocent! Think about it do you really think a kind, affectionate wolf that loves grandma would hurt her ... on purpose?
Firstly I believe that the wolf is very helpful as he did all grandmas chores. So how did the wolf end up in grandmas clothes you ask? Here's how the wolf was just trying to get grandmas favourite dress when grandma falls bumps her head and gets knocked out cold. So the wolf dressed up as grandma hoping the rude, untrustworthy little red riding hood would not no the diffrence.
Secondly I believe that little red riding hood should not have been walking through the woods alone do you agree? She is not even 10 and yet her mother lets her walk walk throudh the woods unsupervised! ( bad parenting skills )
Thirdly Little Red riding hood gave grandma horrible toffe that made her teeth stick together. So the thoughtful wolf offered to eat the toffe but Little Red just ignored him completly and kept giving grandma that horrid teeth rotting candy. So of course the wolf got grumpy and he lashed out, but no harm was done.
That is why I believe the wolf is innocent! I think this does not sound like a wolf who would even think about eating people do you agree? I also think Little Red riding hood should go to jail and her mum needs to learn how to be a responsible parent.
What do you think?
By Kayla
I believe that the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, case 4567 is not guilty! Little Red has poisoned all of your minds with lies. I mean why would a caring young fellow attack an old woman and a young girl?
Firstly he can't come here today to plead his innocence for he was shot multiple times by a 2 gauge revolver through the head and chest. She was under age and should never have taken a fire arm with no experience what so ever. How would you feel if you got a call that your child had shot a innocent man with a pistol?
After committing this horrible crime, one of the three little pigs phoned for help. Little Red Riding Hood came over and shot that Wolf too and by using CCTV security camera footage Police identified that she killed the poor Wolf too!!
Is Little Red so cute now?
You thought a murderer was telling the truth! Well its still not to late...... she should be taken into custody.
If this is not convincing enough, after she shot the wolf she skinned him! Chop! Chop! Chop! with scissors and she turned his lovely fur into a coat! S
o now you can see the truth of what happened that day and that Little Red Ridding Hood should go to jail!!

Awesome Kiwi Sport
On Wednesday 14th the year 5 & 6's had Kiwi sport at Brightwater Domain. There were amazing activities, sadly we could not do them all. We could only do 7 out of 13. My favourite activity was the Top Town station. We did cool challenges like building a tower and throwing hoops onto targets. Kiwi sport is also a great way to met new people and make friends. We had a blast!

Problem Solving Challenge - Day 5
Today we had to make a pulley that would lift a full water bottle in a plastic bag, up a 3 meter height. We only had newspaper and tape to use. The idea was to life the water up as fast as you could and sit it on the top platform. If the pulley broke, then your group was out. The winning team was the and it only to them 9 SECONDS! They were really fast and their pulley was very strong.

Problem Solving Challenge - Day 4
Our fourth challenge was to make a house! It had to have 2 rooms, a door that opened and closed and a roof. A pretend person about 10cm high had to be able to fit through the door easily. For this challenge we had newspaper, tape, string and scissors. The group that won this challenge was the Otters. Megan decided on theirs because they put time and effort into the outside structure of their house so it was really strong.
Problem Solving Challenge - Day 3
Our third challenge was to make an emergency stretcher using only newspaper, tape and string. The stretcher had to carry a full water bottle plus a container of water across the adventure playground. The group who could get across the playground the quickest and have the most water left in the container won. This went to the Buzzy Bees who lost very little water and managed to get across the playground in 1 minute 23 seconds.

Problem Solving Challenge - Day 2
Today our challenge was to create a tower as high as possible, using only dry spaghetti and marshmallows. We were given a packet of spaghetti and only 20 marshmallows. Megan also had to be able to put a small weight on the tower and it needed to stay there for 30 seconds. This challenge was quite tricky. Some groups would get their tower quite high but then it would fall. NZ creations (Tamzin, Sophie, Jessica and Kayla) took this challenge out for the second day in a row.
