Olympic Art
Catriana gave us this really cool art idea. We are creating a tissue version of Wenlock, the olympic mascot. We are using red and blue tissues to create a raised effect.

Samsung Truck & Mini Olympics
Today 20 Ranzau Seniors went to the Mini Olympics at Saxton Field. Before we started the Mini Olympics we went through the Samsung Truck. In the Samsung Truck they had an X-Box, Tablets, Phones, Cameras and a giant phone. You used the technology to complete a quiz and send messages to the NZ olympic team. For the Mini Olympics we completed 8 different events. We did javelin really well because we scored lots of 5 pointers. The rowing event was on a rowing machine and 825 meters in 5 minutes was the record. We rowed 725 meters in 5 minutes. One event was weight lifting. It was a relay and you had to run down and grab some 2kg weights and do some bicep curls!
Room 8 came second. We had heaps of fun.

Music Making
Today for music we were in small groups and we had to play a piece of music on the glockenspiel and use percussion instruments too.
Here is a short video of how we did.

Zoe's face to face with a Tuatara!
In the holidays my family went to Invercargill for my Granny's 80th. While we were there we chopped up some old wood and collected some huhu grubs. We went and fed these to some Tuataras. They were really quite and sat really still.
It was a really cool experience.

Model search 2012
As I was waiting in line my knees were wobbling, my heart was pounding and butterflies were fluttering around in my tummy like mad! I was at the Model search at the Richmond Mall with about 45 other kids, including Bree and Savannah. It was my turn! OH NO I screamed in my head. As I started walking up my eyes were fixed on the judges. Then I heard a huge cheer coming out of the crowd saying "GO SOFIA'' Thats when I saw that it was Mum, Zac and Dad. As I walked from one side to another I could feel my nervousness growing bigger and bigger than before. When I walked off the catwalk I was relived and happy because I had done a good job !
Then I thought how will Bree and Savannah do? One of my friends Elise came 1st, 2 times in a row.
After every one had their go we gathered in a bunch and listened. Savannah's number was 32, Bree's number was 19 and my number was11. We all listened very carefully as the numbers got called out, number 12, number 22, number 40, number 19. Wow that was Bree's number! She looked so excited as she walked up on stage to get her t-shirt they said she was in the final! I was so happy for Bree that she got in the final and also for myself. I think I did a great job.

Olympic Fever
Yesterday we watched this inspiring clip about a past olympic competitor. It has a really powerful message about not giving up and always finishing what you start. The Olympics will be our Inquiry focus for the first 5 weeks this term.
Falling off into the water!
I could hear his hooves pounding on the soft sand as we gathered more speed. We were going the fastest I had ever gone on a pony. I noticed that he was edging into the water. Then suddenly he shyed side ways into the silky sand. Slowly a wave rolled in and he turn and galloped away. I could see the water rushing up to meet me I was waiting to hit the ground but I found myself being dragged through the water and let go of the reins. The water covered my face. I pulled myself out of the water my cloth's felt cold and heavy. I walked over to catch Danny Mum was running over to us. I was soaked to the skin. The water was about freezing! I gave Danny a pat I could fell sand sand up my back and my jodhpurs were heavy and wet. I was going to have to walk back to the horse float!

This morning we spent some time checking out the Mahana School class blogs. We made some comments on their posts. We hope they like receiving some positive comments from Room 8!
Working on our mapping skills
This morning we are trying to locate as many mountains from around the world as possible! We had no idea that Mt Fuji was in Japan and did you know that the Rockies in America stretch for 4,830km?

Interschool hockey tournament
On Wednesday 2 Year 5 and 6 Ranzau teams went to a hockey tournament at Saxton field. We had a boys team and a girls team. The boys team was called the RANZAU SUPERMEN and the girls team was called the RANZAU PRINCESS. It was a very fun and active day! Each team had about three or four games and then depending if you won your games then your team were into the semi finals. Then if you lost a game you were out! The girls team did really well, we didn't get into the finals but we came 3rd overall.

Sports Committee goes to the Ark
The Ranzau sports committee went to the ark to teach some preschoolers Ripper rugby skills. We were given some little people to look after and take to an activity that had been set up. The kids were very excited and it was a fantastic morning. We were teaching them to pass, kick and score a try. They all did very well. The preschoolers and the sports committee had lots of fun. We got to practice our leadership skills that we had learnt with Janice from Sport Tasman.

Hockey
On Wednesday we went to an inter-school hockey tournament at Saxton Field. The boys team were the Ranzau Supermen and the girls team was the Ranzau Princesses. We had a fantastic day with the boys winning the competition and the girls getting 3rd! The hardest team we came up against was Henley. The score was 4-3 to the Ranzau Supermen, thanks to a late goal with about 20 seconds left to go in the game! It was awesome.

ANZAC Art
Over the last few weeks Room 8 has been working on some ANZAC art. We had to choose an image that we thought represented ANZAC day or the War. We only used pencil to create our art and the only colour came from the red poppy. Brooklyn and Sofia chose to do a war solider. They look fantastic!
People Savers - First Aid
On Friday Renee from NZ Red Cross came in to Room 8 to teach us first aid. We learnt our DRS ABC and the order to do things when someone is hurt. D-Danger, R-Response, S-Send for help, A-Airway, B-Breathing, C-Circulation. We learnt how to put a bandage on and also how to put someone into the recovery position. Renee helped us understand what the people from NZ Red Cross did. They helped the people during the Christchurch earthquake. She also taught us about Poisons and the phone number if anyone swallows or breaths in any type of Poisons 0800 POISON.

Problem Solving
On Friday we had to try and make a poppy that was free standing. We had to try and make it as tall as possible. It was really hard because as it got higher, the weight of the newspaper would make it fold back! Only one group got their poppy to stand on its own.
